Song stuck in my head

For the past day and a half, this song has been stuck in my head. My girlfriend played it for me once after we had had a bad fight and it is a song that means something to us, a song we sometimes play for each other when we can't say sorry well enough on our own.

I've been thinking about that song and video more lately... This video is one of my favorite videos of all time, for various reasons. That's all I'm going to say for now.

I'm going to California

"Going to California, yes
To resurrect my soul
The sun is always shining, shining
Or at least that's what I'm told
I'm going to California
Theres a better life for me, yes
Going to California
I'll write and tell you what I see
I'm going to California
Somebody say a prayer for me"

'Going to California' ~ Pink

"Take me to the place where the sunshine flows
Oh my Sunset Rodeo

Hot fudge here comes the judge
There's just a green card in the way
The Holy Ghost and the whole East Coast
Are moving to L.A.
'Cause we've been dreaming of this feeling since 1988
Mother things have got to change
I'm moving to L.A."

'Hot Fudge' ~ Robbie Williams (Well, not LA and no green card so far, but almost)

The last two nights, I cried over the uncertainty of my future. I was scared shitless that I wouldn't be able to move to the States and how that would affect my life. But today, I finally was told that I got into college in California! I
was so relieved and happy. There are a thousand things that I have to do and organize and orientation takes place not even a month from now, so I'll be super-busy. I think the news hasn't even really settled in, especially since I haven't booked a flight yet. But I am super-excited and just have to smile every time I think about it.

That's all for now, but there sure is more to come!

Kelly Clarkson speaks to me

Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson

"Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreamin' of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed
I could breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love

I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get on board a fast train
Travel on a jetplane, far away
And breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
I won't forget all the ones that I love
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging round revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me
But, gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye, gotta
Take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway"

I'm kinda shocked to learn that Avril Lavigne actually co-wrote the lyrics. I love the video and I love the song, because that is exactly how I have felt for a very long time and still feel.

New Taylor Swift Video

Taylor Swift recently released her new video for 'You Belong With Me' and it's absolutely cute! The song just is a bit bitter-sweet but with the nice positive ending and the video is just very feel-good to me. And those glasses! Enjoy, I certainly did!

Soundtrack to my life

I've been listening to three songs ALL the time in the last weeks, so I thought I'd share the soundtrack to my days with you.

First off, I'm not a huge Lady GaGa fan, simply because I generally don't listen to Dance or whatever genre you would put her into. But damn, that woman has an amazing voice! I love her acoustic version of 'Poker Face', which has great lyrics as well. My favorite line? "Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun"

The next two songs have a certain emotional value to me, because I first heard them when my gf sang them to me on the phone. I'd seen and read about Taylor Swift, obviously, but I hadn't listened to any of her music up until my gf told me to. I really fell for two of her songs, 'Love Story' and 'You belong with me'.

I don't really listen to country-pop either, apart from Shania Twain, but I have to say that she's definitely talented.

I actually prefer 'You Belong with Me' over 'Love Story' because I like the lyrics and totally get what she's singing about, even when I haven't been in that situation myself.

Theme song appreciation

I love a good theme song. I love to hear the same song I've heard hundreds of times before and know that one of my favorite shows is on. Or hearing a song on the radio and having to smile because it makes me think of a movie or a show.

One of my favorite theme songs ever is Gilmore Girls' "Where You Lead" by Carole King.

Naturally, I also remember the theme songs that make me think of shows I watched when I was younger:

"I'm Always Here" from Baywatch

Probably one of the most famous theme songs ever: "I'll Be There for You" by The Rembrandts for Friends

And, of course, from one of my favorite shows ever, Charmed (seasons 1 to 3), "How Soon is Now?".

Funny side note - I always used to sing:

"See I've already waited too long
and all my hope is Prue."

because I'm a dork.

Moving on to films, I absolutely love the Harry Potter theme, because it's just so classic and very distinctive to me.

The intro to this movie (My Best Friend's Wedding) is actually my favorite part of the movie, apart from that, I don't really like the rest much. But that song and that video totally rock!

Wonder what movie that song is from?

"Maneater" from Runaway Bride

One last song though: Even though this is a very incomplete and personal list, I have to absolutely include one of the James Bond theme songs. God, I love those themes!

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Rachel Weisz, who is both stunningly beautiful and hot!

Melissa Etheridge. How could I not love that woman? Firstly, her music. "Like the Way I Do". "Angels Would Fall". "Similar Features". "I'm the Only One". "Map of the Stars". I don't think I could choose a favorite song. My favorite Melissa song changes every day, depending on the mood I'm in. That's so great about her music, there's a song for every mood. If someone told me I had to choose only one artist that I could listen to for the rest of my life I could easily choose her as I listen to her music most of the time anyways. Secondly, Melissa Etheridge seems to do everthing she does with conviction and because she really believes in it.

Thirdly, she's a lesbian icon and a great one for that matter.
"I have achieved the American dream. The big beautiful American dream is mine. And that's not easy thing, 'cause I'm different. At least that's what they say. They say I'm different, but you know what? As of today, I'm done. I'm done being different, okay?"
As I said, how could I not love that woman?

A weekend well spent

I had a long weekend as Friday was a catholic holiday and I really enjoyed it!! It was raining buckets on Friday and Saturday, so I spent the days camped out in from of our new, huge TV-screen.

On Saturday, I met a dear friend, Ms. A., to watch 'The Mummy' at the movies. It was okay, funny at times and I loved Maria Bello - even though I prefer her as a 'darker/sexier' character (think 'A History of Violence'). After the film we went back to my place and watched the end of 'Garfield' (not good, strange animation), '50 First Dates' (cute!), parts of a Madonna concert from her 'Confessions tour' (amazing!!). There was one interlude in which voices talked about child abuse, self injury and gang wars and her dancers did an interpretive dance - that part was so powerful it took my breath away!

On Sunday, I camped out on the couch again, watching reality TV and parts of 'I'm going to tell you a secret', which was really interesting. I always thought that Madonna must be pretty smart, just because she's so versatile and she said some really interesting, smart things in the documentary. It made me like her even more. I never realized how political her shows are, pretty impressive!

Today, work was actually really good, I had a lot to do and I did most of the work on my own and the time passed pretty quickly! The length of a day can feel so different when you have things to do. I feel really accomplished! I also already started planning which courses I will take next term, more about that maybe some other time.

Pink, Madonna, Ellen & Portia

Previous Weekend Crush Pink released a new single called "So What" which is a message to her ex-husband Cary Hart. What happened to 'best friends with a huge amount of love and respect for one another'? I like the new song, but I'm not sure whether I really love it. Some excerpts from "So What":

"I guess I just lost my husband
I don't know where he went
So I'm gonna drink my money
I'm not gonna pay his rent"

"What if this song's on the radio
Then somebody's gonna die
I'm gonna get in trouble
My ex will start a fight"

I have to say the lyrics are pretty damn good. I can't wait for more singles to be released, the album is going to be released October 28th.

Madonna turned 50 today! Happy Birthday to her majesty. Whether you like her music or not, I think we all have to agree that she's a genius, she has reinvented herself so many times it's amazing. I generally like her music, I keep dancing to "4 Minutes".

Ellen and Portia are getting married this weekend!! All love and happiness to my favourite IRL couple, you deserve it!

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Penelope Cruz. Hmmh, yummy.

The first real pop/rock concert that I went to was one of Pink's "Try this" concerts in Vienna in 2004. My parents had originally planned on us going on vacation that weekend, but I so badly wanted to go to the concert that after three days of me ignoring them COMPLETELY, they finally agree to postpone the holiday. Believe me, it was worth it! I've been a Pink fan since her second album made her famous in Europe and seeing her perform live is even better than her CD's. I've been to two concerts of her concerts in Vienna and even though I can't compare it to anything else because hers are the only concerts I've been to, I can say that she's an amazing singer and performer. She might not have the best light effects or the most elaborate show, but her voice is really great and her costumes make up for the special effects that she doesn't use. Pink trains her body to get ready for her tours and believe me, it's worth it. Anyone who's ever stood in the second row at one of her concerts and saw her perform in what I would describe as underwear knows what I'm talking about. Pink is hot!

Pink has been in the news lately due to her divorce and her rumoured new girlfriend/boyfriend (depending on the gossip magazine). The singer has been fairly open in the past, saying that she is bisexual and has had relationships with men and women. Honestly, her playing for my team doesn't hurt either. I sure love a woman who speaks her mind and is smart and strong, as well as funny!! It seems that I'm not the only gay lady who loves Pink for the kind of girls she represents, her concerts in Vienna were like huge lesbian gatherings. Talk about girl power! Her songs also really convey her great attitude, that it's better to be who you are than to try and fit in.

Soundtrack to my life

I tend to listen to the same cd/artist/song over and over again until I get sick of it. The latest music addiction is "Sky" by Joshua Radin feat. Ingrid Michaelson. They played that song on Grey's when Erica kissed Callie for the first time. That was when I fell in love with this song. Since then, "Sky" has been playing on my laptop ALL THE TIME. I'm a bit obsessed, I do realise that. But I so don't care :)

Enjoy!
