Brooke awesomeness times three

This weekend, I watched three movies with Brooke Smith in them. Before you ask, yes, I watched them just because Brooke was in them. I am that kind of a fan girl. The crazy-obsessed kind. Just kidding, I just enjoy discovering her work.

The first movie I saw was 'Vanya on 42nd street', which was actually more of a theatre play than a movie. They filmed actors doing theatre, but the cameras were on stage too, so the perspective was not really from the audience. According to Wikipedia, the actors rehearsed the play to better understand Anton Chekhov's play 'Uncle Vanya'. It was definitely a very interesting and rare way of making a movie. Brooke played Sonya, a young woman who was madly in love with a man who doesn't even notice her. Among the cast were Julianne Moore and Wallace Shawn, who we all know from The L Word's notorious 'Inconceivable' quote-fame (Yeah, I totally made that word up, sue me!). The general feel to the movie was very sad and despaired, but the pace and the great acting make it a special experience. I probably wouldn't have watched it if Brooke hadn't been in it, but afterwards I was glad that I did.

On the same day, I also saw 'Iron Jawed Angels', which had an amazing cast. The movie mainly deals with suffragettes and the life story of Alice Paul. I don't want to give too much away, I mean I guess the ultimate ending to the story should be pretty clear to everybody - if not, read a book, really, just any book, you clearly need it!! - but there was one scene that I found incredibly beautiful and hot at the same time. Hillary/Alice, in a bathtub, thinking about the man she loves, pleasuring herself. And that's all I'm going to say.

I found the picture on the official website of the movie, just so you know. The cast consists of Anjelica Houston, Frances O'Connor, Lois Smith (not Brooke's mother), Molly Parker, Patrick Dempsey and the incredibly beautiful Julia Ormond. I loved the movie because it was full of strong women fighting for their rights and the fact that it's a true story makes for a good learning experience.

Sunday, I watched Getting Off aka Remembering Sex, which was easily the strangest of the three films. Also very sad, the main character is so different to the suffragettes that I squirmed through parts of the film. Again, I don't want to give anything away, the movie was good, but not very encouraging for the female population, IMO. Brooke was pretty amazing, as she always is and like in the first movie, her character was in love with her best friend who didn't love her back the same way because he was gay. Unfortunately, she had short hair in that movie. Not the best look, as much as I love her, but it just doesn't suit her. At all.

Search Engine fun

I had a great laugh a while ago when I checked my blog stats. Someone landed on my blog by searching for 'Rachael Ray femslash'. Sorry to disappoint, but I've never written a Rachael Ray femslash story. Interesting idea though.

To the person who wanted to know 'Is Brooke Smith gay IRL?'. Well, no. But hey, she's very gay-friendly, so we can live with that, right? And look at her and her husband, don't they look cute and happy together?

Okay, I'll admit that this post is sort of just an excuse to post the absolutely beautiful pictures of Brooke at the Milk premiere. If you tell me you mind, then you're clearly lying!

Letters to Brooke and Sara

The amazing LJ-Erica/Callie-community asked us to writer letters to Brooke and Sara to send them. So I did. I had a really difficult time writing the one to Sara because to me, the writers f*cked Callie up pretty badly and I'm angry at them and at Callie a bit too. Obviously, I didn't want to tell her that, because it's not her fault, so I wrote something different.

My letter to Brooke:

Dear Brooke Smith,

Thank you for being brave and putting so much emotion into the portrayal of one of the most *real* characters on TV, Erica Hahn.

Most people will probably say that the ‘leaves/glasses’ scene was your best and I have to agree, your acting in it was definitely Emmy-worth and just amazing. But the scenes that spoke to me even more were different ones. The first moment that made me fall in love with Erica completely was in the scene in which Erica helped Callie move into the new apartment. When you/Erica touched Callie, my heart literally skipped a beat and I felt like ‘This is real, their chemistry is real, their affection for each other is real.’ The second scene that spoke to me even more was when you/Erica watched Callie get on the elevator. The smile that you had on your face spoke louder and clearer than any words could ever have. I will always remember that moment as the ‘Cutest. Callica. Moment. Ever.’ And honestly, who hasn’t watched someone they are completely smitten with with a bright smile on their face? I know I have.

Even though it didn’t last as long as I would have wished, having two beautiful, stunning, interesting, complex, *real* female characters on TV deal with their feelings for each other made my world a better place. I know I am not the only one when I say that you have affected me in a way only very few actresses have and I am forever grateful for your courage and willingness to take on ‘difficult’ characters. The range of emotions you showed from 'bad-ass cardio goddess Hahn' to 'soft, head over heels in love Erica' blew my mind.

One thing is for sure, I will follow you and your career, no matter where it will lead us!

My letter to Sara:

Dear Sara Ramirez!

When Callie was first introduced as a possible love interest for George, I loved how you played her as a strong woman who knew what she wanted. I didn’t like how George treated Callie and how much Callie changed throughout the storyline, even though I was always blown away by your acting talent. You were allowed to be sexy, vulnerable, angry, hurt, strong and funny as Callie and I always loved how multi-dimensional your character was.

I was so excited to see the friendship between Erica and Callie blossom. It made sense that two smart doctors who disliked the drama would strike up a connection and even though we were only allowed to see small glimpses, I was completely sold on the chemistry between Erica and Callie. Never before have I been so invested in a fictional couple – I even went so far to write fanfiction to keep me sane over the summer. Needless to say, I am very disappointed that you weren’t allowed to play Callie as ‘clingy’, because I would have loved to see that!

I will forever be grateful that you are bold and brave enough to dance in your underwear, pee naked and take off your shirt on national television. As a girl who is drawn to *real* women with *real* bodies, I will never understand how size 0 is considered attractive in Hollywood. You are so gorgeous just the way you are!

Just like with Erica, my memories with Callie will always be very bittersweet, but my admiration for you as an actress and a person will not be tainted by the network's decision. Thank you for being an ally and a friend to the LGBT community. This is just one reason why I look up to you!

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Brooke Smith.

I've heard people complain about Erica Hahn and I've heard enough people say 'Really, you like her? But she's so mean' and I've read that the writers were going to make her 'unlikable', but I was impressed with Erica right away and the more we got to see of her, the more I fell for her. When we first met Dr. Hahn in season 2, she was snarky, determined and willing to fight for her patient. She also showed vulnerability when Alex told her that the heart was going to go to Denny Duquette.

In season 3, Erica was as snarky as I remembered her and she also showed that the patient's welfare is her top priority. Erica was able to control her emotions and her ego to work together with Burke, which is something I haven't seen from other characters on this show.

Then season 4 came around and Brooke came on the show full-time. I was so excited about her because on her first day of work, she stood up to McDreamy and McSteamy and told the Chief off. Erica took work seriously and she was a feminist, something I especially loved about her because most of the other female characters on the show weren't, at least not so openly. Erica even told Sloan to stop hitting on her and wasn't at all impressed by his charm, something no other female had yet done on GA. When Erica and Callie started becoming friends I hoped and prayed that the rumors were true and that it would lead to more, because their chemistry was amazing and they would have been great together.

And great they were. For a few episodes, we were allowed to see Erica fall for Callie hard and their attempt at figuring out their feelings. We got to see their first kiss and their first date and in one episode, we were even allowed to see things from Erica's point of view. Erica went through changes that a lot of people out there go through and came to the realization that she was 'so, so, so gay, extremely gay' and that it was okay for her. She was bold and tried to give Callie confidence but she also allowed Callie to see her vulnerable side. In short, she was human, but she also was adult enough to face her feelings, her fears openly. And she was ready to talk about it, a quality most characters on GA also lack.

The fact that ABC decided to 'let Brooke Smith go' is a great disservice to the quality of GA and shows that creativity and quality doesn't seem to be the first thing on their minds. Which I hope will not only hurt us as the fans, but will also come back to kick them in the ass.

To end this post on a positive note, I will never in my life forget this scene, because it probably is my favorite Callica-moment. Can you spell smitten?

When the shit hits the fan

I thought I'd compile a list of facts that we have on the Brooke Smith situation and then tell you what I think about it. There are a lot of rumors floating around, so just to be perfectly save, I'll only include official statements.

After having filmed the 'You are glasses' scene and being told how great she was in it, Brooke was told "they couldn't write for my character anymore." Shonda told her and to Brooke "it definitely seemed like [Shonda's] hands were tied".

For full disclosure, here's Shonda Rhimes' statement:

"Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and
we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season." (Emphasis mine)

Everyone with a pair of eyes knows that this can't possibly be true. If the magic or chemistry was off the blame definitely lies with the writers for writing Callie the way they did. How can you tell Brooke how amazing she was in her coming out speech and then say that the chemistry wouldn't sustain in the long run? Besides, they could have simply broken up and that would have made for good drama.

What we also know is that ABC sent their stars a statement containing what they were allowed to say and I think we can call that a gag-order. Patrick Dempsey's interview on Ellen is evidence enough for me.



Here's what I think went down:

They filmed the 'You are glasses' scene and episode and I guess they have to run their episodes through with the execs. Then, three things happened.

1. The big bosses were surprise to see that this wasn't a 'Two hot girls making out while drunk' scene aka 'the ultimate male fantasy', but that this was a real lovestory between two real women, which obviously isn't hot nor interesting to the average straight viewer.

2. I hate to say that but both Brooke and Sara look more like real women than most actresses in Hollywood and I think that this was also part of the problem. While I think Brooke Smith is beautiful and amazing in her own way, the execs probably thought 'If we have lesbians they better be hot/thin/stacked/blond/young.'

3. They probably already had that idea with Erica finding out about Izzie stealing the heart and the execs probably thought that this was the best way to get rid of Erica right away. Honestly, I think that it will make some sense.

I'm still fuming and I hope that we get some more information about this, but Brooke obviously doesn't have real information either, she only knows what Shonda told her, which basically wasn't anything at all.

Grey's spoilers really start rolling in!

I think I might have mentioned it before, I generally try to stay clear of spoilers, due to numerous reasons. Mainly, you never know how reliable a spoiler is and it's just way more fun to be surprised. But with the way the Erica/Callie relationship ended last season, it has been very hard for me to resist. I worry about what will happen with them and I just want to be sure that there will be a Callica-relationship.

So, spoiler warning! Another cute Brooke video surfaced, again from the press tour that the other videos I've already seen were from. I wonder why they held it back!?!

I think it's kinda cute that they are avoiding each other. Did you notice the smile when she said "Sandra" - they played lovers *hehe*.

At the 'Television without pity forum', someone uploaded a TV Guide article (huge thanks!). It seems that McSteamy is in the picture to play Cupid, not to get involved with either of them, which is a huge relieve to me! And look at that picture of Erica and Mark.

It looks like Erica will actually wear curls in the new season!! I know that I'm obsession about her hair, but I just love her curls, I can't help it. Secret turn-on for me (okay, maybe not so secret).

(BTW, sorry for the 'double post', but I didn't want to mix the two topics.)

Pure randomness

I recently saw a new picture of Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey on the set of Grey's and then fired up google to see if I could find a picture of Brooke or Sara, but didn't. So imagine my glee when I visit to Grey's Anatomy Insider and find this:

*YAY*. For two reasons: 1) Those glasses - how cool can one person be? 2) Her hair - I admit it could be curlier, but it still is pretty curly and looks different than last season, so I'm excited already!! I hope that that picture was taken after hair and makeup, because I need to see some curly hair going on with Erica!! I really need to visit GA Insider more often, I am usually pretty up-t- date with all the good fansites and links, but I somehow hadn't gotten into that one yet. But now I'm not going to let this site slip from my sight again!

Added new blog to the blogroll, well, actually a LJ journal. This girl has some really funny and interesting comments about Grey's Anatomy and Callica and she can write some mean fanfic (Callie/Izzie one-shot).

I'm feeling sort of random right now. At lunch today my mum told me she's worried about me because she thinks I live in two parallel universes. Duh! I tried to explain to her that that is not a bad thing and that being online so much basically keeps me sane. Or as sane as I am. Because if I didn't read and write Callica fanfiction and if I didn't watch old Grey's Anatomy episodes to rave about Callie's scenes I might as well have myself admitted.

I feel a bit bad for Liz. In the last "This just out", she told Raimy that she thinks more girls are into Raimy than into her. I kind of think that she might be right, I have a huge crush on Raimy as well. But for Liz it must be a bit weird because it's her show and she does most of the work. She did mention it for a reason - mainly to make Raimy feel better about the way she looks (as in not being thin), but I wonder how she really feels about that.

Samba, fire shows and Brooke Smith - what more do I need?

Walking acts

This weekend, I was at the Pflasterspektakel twice, once on Friday and once on Saturday. I and a friend danced in the samba parade both days, which was so much fun and then we saw the fire shows that take place at night at the main square. On Saturday, the artists had a big finale, in which most of the fire artists participated and it was amazing! They did some things that I hadn't seen before and it blew my mind!

Today, I finally went to watch Nim's Island and it was ok, I enjoyed it but I sort of expected more - I guess because I'm not used to Jodie Foster being in such a movie and such a role. I loved Abigail Breslin, she was great as usual and I like Jodie Foster as well, she was funny. I guess this was one of the movies that just really is a kid movie and works best for kids.

Brooke Smith was at the ABC All-Star TCA press tour party and did two interviews with slight spoilers for Season 5's Callica storyline. The first one is with EW's Ausiello and is very cute and actually interesting. Michael Ausiello is the guy who first predicted that Erica Hahn would turn out to be gay and he apparently knows a lot about the business. Brooke's very cute in the interview (love her hair!!) and she once again gushes about Sara Ramirez (who could blame her?). The second one is great too - and Brooke knows that we are out there!! We being Callica fans. I'm not crazy about the fact that we miss 2 weeks, but they seem to know how to deal with the relationship, so *YAY*!

Daydreaming and science

Largest screen in Austria @ Bergisel

First of all, sorry to the three (approximately) people who regularly read my little blog that it has been so long since my last update. I've been busy with organizing my little event, university and daydreaming about Callie and Sara and Brooke.

The event I'm organizing is moving along surprisingly well. Today, I got the permission for the budget and I found another friend who will help me make coffee and with whatever I need help. I've finally also been told that we can actually buy some more coffee makers, even though I technically am not allowed to buy them. But my "boss" will take care of that. I really hope that the invitation e-mail will be sent out tomorrow, I already sent it to the university yesterday evening and they should send those things out right away. The university refuses to give us the e-mail addresses (which they legally would be required to do), so I have to be nice and hope that they will send it out tomorrow, if they haven't done that until noon I'll probably have to call them. So now, next week, I'll have to buy all the food and drinks and then I'm ready.

I had a small written exam today and I had to re-calculate the first exercise about 4 times because I had miscalculations everywhere. I guess an exam at 8 in the morning is not exactly a good idea, but I hope that in the end, I don't have too many mistakes in it. We'll see...

There was something interesting in the paper today: Swedish scientists have found out that men's brains have a typical asymmetry - their right side of the brain is slightly larger than the left side. Women's brains however are symmetrical. BUT: Gay men's brains are symmetrical and lesbians' brains are asymmetrical! The scientists don't know for sure whether this difference already exists when we are born (obviously, you can't ask a baby whether it's straight and there exist no long-term studies yet) or whether this asymmetry develops due to hormones. Interesting! I am pretty certain that I was born gay, because I had a very strong tendency towards the female gender ever since I was little, but that's just me. Honestly, I'm not sure whether I want to know why some people are straight and others are not, because if scientists know they might also find a "cure" and I don't feel like I need to be cured. I like the mystery around this subject, even though the stereotypes bother me (homosexuals were molested as kids, it's a choice, ...).

There is this saying (is it something Austrian/European??): "I live in my own world, but that's ok because they know me there." That saying describes me perfectly, I'm a big old daydreamer. Lately, I've been daydreaming what it would be like to actually meet Sara Ramirez or Brooke Smith (surprise! ya'll didn't think I would be daydreaming about those two, right??). So, amazed by my own inability to stop thinking about them, I wikipediad obsession and decided to proceed to obsessive love. I know that I'm pretty OCD sometimes - eg, the pens in my pencil case all MUST face in one direction, if someone borrows a pen and puts it back facing the wrong direction I HAVE to turn it around. I'm often afraid that I will starve to death (my mum says that's because my dad's parents are from Siebenbürgen/Transilvania, they also had that fear of starving to death), so when we would go away on holiday I'd always have enough food with me. I've been able to stop worrying about food because now I always have enough money with me to buy something to eat and I've learned that I will not starve to death, it'll rather be the opposite - I'll die of having eaten too much fat and sugar. Anyways, my point is that even my friends in school would sometimes call me Monk for being OCD about something. Obviously, I'm not seriously mentally ill, I'm just odd. Anyways, wikipedia says about obsessive love that can come from leisure, feelings of vulnerability (check!), a perceived failure to belong (check!), feelings of being special and/or different (check!), feelings of distance from peers (check!) and particular childhood experiences (semi-check). 4 1/2 out of 6? Not bad. I'm past the stalking (you know - been there, done that) and I'm definitely not THAT obsessed - I wouldn't try to kill someone to get someone else's attention (John Hinckley). BUT, I wonder whether my obsessions have anything to do with the fact that I've never dated someone or the fact that I feel really queasy when I'm in a group with more than, say 3-5 people. On the other hand, which of these things is the cause and which the effect? Hm, right now I feel like this blog is really self-cleansing.

On a lighter note: I went to watch the soccer game Austria vs Germany at the Bergisel stadium. The Bergisel ramp is used for ski jumping and there was a demo jumping which we unfortunately missed because it took us forever to get through security. But it was a great experience, the stadium holds over 15.000 viewers and I think that there might have actually been that many people! Austria lost, but I was counting on that already, even though they were playing good. When we made our way down to the city through the forest path, some cars were driving next to use, slowly because of all the people. A friend of mine said out loud whether one of the cars would take us down and then one driver actually asked us whether we wanted to drive down with him! We were a group of four girls, so I didn't hesitate when the others got into the car and we chatted a bit with him. He was really nice and asked where we were from and what we were doing in Innsbruck and I actually asked him too where he was from. When we arrived at the street, we obviously had to get out of the car and his girlfriend/partner and his mother (??) got into the car and they had VIP-passes! So I thought, oh, that had to be some VIP. Turns out, my friend recognised him - his name is Andreas Kofler and he's a ski jumper!! He's pretty famous in Austria but it was dark so I didn't recognise him. But I thought it was really nice of him to offer us a ride and chat with us! So thanks to Andreas Kofler!

Ok, I admit it: I'm hooked, addicted, obsessed even with Callica. Admitting it is the first step to recovery, right? Right? My problem right now is that there is no new material out there - except for these horrible, stupid spoilers which I really don't want to read. So, as the crazy fan that I am, I read fanfiction. I have so far refrained from googling for further fanfiction, as I try to deal with my addiction. It's not easy when ALL you can think about is this beautiful, gorgeous, hot Callie Torres kissing Erica Hahn. So, here's the thing what gets me the most: In the beginning, I felt sorry for Callie, because the other girls treated her like sh*t and George hardly ever stood up for her. But then, when George cheated on Callie, she became more interesting to me, because she confronted Izzie and while she was vulnerable and hurt, she also was in power and didn't take sh*t from them. When Erica became a regular character, I immediately started liking her, just because she called Derek and Sloan "Pretty and Prettier" and thought they were a couple. How great was that scene?? And then, she was not at all impressed by Sloan trying to get into her pants. Plus, she even invited herself to the "gentleman's evening" because she thought it was sexist that the chief had not invited her. So, I just already adore these two characters on their own. IRL, I would look up to them and be drawn to their strength. But now, Shonda Rhimes has thrown me this bait and I just can't stop thinking about them. I guess my wallpaper doesn't help either, but still. At least I have not made that much fanart about them, I haven't made any with the season finale pictures yet. So, how do I keep from starting to write own fanfiction about those two? I'm not a good writer and besides, I have tons of stuff to do and exams are coming up, so right now, I don't have time for my addiction. But then again, it's McCaliente and McSassy *sigh*

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Sara Ramirez, who was my weekend crush last week. Obviously, Dorothy expressed her love for Sara more eloquently than I did, but our message is the same: Sara is hot!!

You could consider this to be part 2 to last weekend’s crush. Brooke Smith plays the other half of Callica, resident heart surgeon Erica Hahn. Erica is uncompromised, tells both the Chief and McSteamy off and generally doesn’t like people she doesn’t know. But she’s made friends with Callie, for which tons of lesbians and Grey’s fans are grateful! I already posted this video, but in case you haven’t seen it yet, you should really check out this little interview with Brooke Smith about the first Callica kiss.

Brooke Smith appeared in The Silence of the Lambs and has guest-starred in numerous shows such as Weeds, Law & Order, Six Feet Under and Crossing Jordan (and many more). Smith was originally only cast as a guest-star in Grey’s Anatomy in five episodes in season 2 & 3 (2x25 – 2x27, 3x09 + 3x10). But, probably after Isaiah Washington got fired, the creators asked her back to become a series regular, starting from episode 4x05. She does an amazing job portraying the fierce, sometimes even rude Erica while still allowing her character to show her feelings – I especially loved the scene where Erica tells Callie she’s mad at her because she just disappeared on her, not because she’s sleeping with Sloan.

Brooke Smith has two daughters, 5-year-old Fanny and the adopted 7-months old Lucy. She has the most amazing blue eyes probably on TV right now, especially because she can put so much emotion into them. With her, I really have the feeling that the eyes are the windows to the soul (the pictures don’t do those eyes justice :-( ). What makes her even more crush-worthy in my eyes is that she has really great curly hair, which I totally dug! Even though the way the stylist styles her hair for Grey’s fits Erica’s character way better, I still love her curls!

The L Word has spoiled me...

Last week on Grey's Anatomy's season finale, Callie Torres kissed Erica Hahn after a lot of talk about threesomes. Callie decided to be honest and allow her feelings and we'll see next season how that's going to work out for her. I was hoping that she would not continue to have meaningless sex with McSteamy, even though I liked the idea that she's really just using him and isn't at all interested in him. Usually, on tv, woman are not allowed to act that way (except for Samantha on Sex and the City). Anyways, Callie tries to explain to Erica how she feels, but is so overwhelmed that she can't express it other than by kissing Erica *Yay*.

While the storyline and the pairing really made me dance around happily - for real! - their kisses were a bit disappointing. Here's the thing: on "The L Word", kisses are always so steamy and hot and French (hehe), that the Callica kisses seemed tame and tv-kissy. While I get it that it must be difficult for the actresses to be all "hot and bothered" with all the cameras, I still was disappointed. "The L Word" has spoiled me, especially Leisha Hailey and Rose Rollins, Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman.

I realise that Showtime is a very different to ABC, but still. I can't wait how the Callica relationship is going to turn out, because I really want to see some more action between Callie and Erica. Check out what Brooke Smith has to say about the first kiss! These two actresses are beautiful and hot and they just need a little more training *snicker*.
