I'm going through a bit of a rough patch, as Alex would say. Honestly, I'm not really sure what's actually going on, I'm trying to figure this all out with the help of therapy and my absolutely amazing girlfriend. Since I don't even really know what is going on, I don't want to write about it here, some things are just too private.
I haven't been very passionate about my Weekend Crushes and it seems to be apparent to others, so I'm going to stop writing them for a while. Who knows, maybe I'll have a great creative idea next week and the words will start pouring out of me again. Until this happens, I will not abandon the blog, but will definitely post less than in recent weeks. I'm still in pretty much the same mute mood.
I have been watching some TV, mainly The Rachel Maddow Show almost daily, The L Word, United States of Tara and The Closer, but I don't even feel that passionate about them right now. So, I hope you will still continue to come visit, even when I post less often and less passionate!

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: The L Word.
When I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona last weekend, I was once again reminded by how beautiful Scarlett Johansson is. Of course I already knew that. Scarlett has voluptuous lips, beautiful eyes and a great body. I also appreciate that she seems to choose her roles wisely, mainly making low-budget, high-quality independent films. I remember watching The Horse Whisperer at the movies when I was young and really relating to her character.
In my opinion, Scarlett has one quality that few actresses have - she emanates a certain kind of calm. I don't know what it is about her and maybe it's just the movies that she's in, but watching her has a calming effect on me. This is something I can really appreciate, because you can't really conjure something like that through acting. Either you have it or you don't.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Famke Janssen. Mmhmh.
I started watching Alias because a friend told me about this new great spy show with a female lead. Naturally, I was intrigued and I really enjoyed watching Alias. One main reason was Jennifer Garner, who led the great cast through some pretty intriguing story lines. You never really knew who the enemy was and who the friend. Sadly, I haven't seen the last season yet, I really want to know how it ends (Don't tell me though!).
I also liked watching her in 13 Going on 30, Elektra and Juno, three movies in which she portrayed very differing characters. I think her appeal comes from the fact that she can look just like one of us - just a bit prettier and way more talented at what she does - and at the same time, she can look absolutely stunning. Plus, I totally adore her dimples.
On Tuesday, the 6th, Jennifer gave birth to her second daughter. Jennifer and Ben seem to be doing a pretty good job at keeping Violet out of the limelight, even though the paparazzi do give them a hard time (Why, oh why?). Congratulations to the family for their little addition!

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Eartha Kitt.
Since I basically make the rules for this, this week's crush is not one single person, but a whole show. In the last year or two, I've been excitedly following all the new vlogs and shows on AfterEllen. One that made me very happy when it returned for season 2 was 'B.J. Fletcher Private Eye'. The series won AE.com Web Series Contest in May and therefore has been posted on AfterEllen as well as the official website.
I just really like the funny cases, the great chemistry between the cast and the silly, light comedy that sometimes gets spiked with just a little bit of drama. Lindy Zucker and Dana Puddicombe are great to watch as BFF's and I'm still kinda hoping that they will eventually end up together, because they just work so well. This week's episode especially appealed to me because it took a more serious turn when BJ's father unexpectedly dies.
I definitely look forward to more great episodes and am really glad that amazing lesbian entertainment, which doesn't only focuse on the fact that the main characters are lesbians, is available online. You can support 'BJ Fletcher' at their website by buying funny tshirts (damn import tax) or donating.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Amy Poehler.
Even though this is still more than true, I figured I need to get over myself and so here we go again! Lisa Edelstein thoroughly impressed and engraved herself in my mind in her role as Cindy McCauliff, a transgendered client on 'Ally McBeal'. I don't have any transgendered friends, so I don't know how realistic the storyline was, but her portrayal of the character and the character's struggle with coming out as transgendered never left my mind. I was more than happy to find out that Edelstein played Dr. Lisa Cuddy on 'House M.D', which I started watching for numerous reasons, her being one.

I have a thing for women in power. Her outfits are definitely appreciated, although I sometimes think she is painfully thin (Is saying this just as sexist as calling someone 'thick'?). I absolutely love the chemistry between House and Cuddy and how Lisa plays Cuddy as a strong and confident, yet at the same time vulnerable woman. I can't wait to see how their relationship will further develop.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Camille from 'When Night is Falling'.
It just feels wrong to think of other women right now. After having talked to my girl for three hours on the phone, I can really only tell you that she is my weekend crush. And if you knew her, you'd know why. She is amazing, has a beautiful voice and makes me all giddy inside.

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Allison Janney.
I've been a member of AfterEllen for 5 years 48 weeks as of today. That is long, considering that according to wikipedia, Sarah founded AE in April 2002. At first I mainly visited the boards, but I started reading the articles on shows that were on in Austria too after a while. I remember the site having no ads and no vlogs and no blog, just Sarah writing about stuff that interested her.
I think what Sarah did is pretty amazing - she missed a news site on lesbian entertainment and decided to create it herself. To say that her endeavor was successful is an understatement. A brothersite, AfterElton, was created in April 2005 and in 2006, Logo bought both sites, leaving Sarah as an executive producer at Logo and the editor in chief of AE. AfterEllen supports lesbian and bisexual artists, giving them a chance to be discovered by 700,000 readers a month.

Sarah is definitely a woman I look up to. She was able to transform her hobby into her daytime job. She is compassionate, intelligent - Harvard alumna!! - and witty. In short, Sarah Warn rocks!

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Lauren Graham, who I love. How I didn't stumble across this singer sooner is a mystery to me. I can't recall hearing any of her songs on the radio before and I'm glad that I did discover her this week. I saw a video of Pink at the American Music Awards, performing 'Angel' with Sarah McLachlan. The song is beautiful and their version of it was too.
Her songs are the perfect background music for serious conversations or just to listen to when I lie in bed at night. Now that I've looked into her biography, I found out that she sang 'Answer' for the movie 'The Brave One'. 'Answer' is a beautiful song, but to me, songs in movies are so much part of the film that I don't pay attention to them separately.
Sarah McLachlan has won eight Juno Awards and was nominated for 21 (!!). She has also won three Grammy Awards, two for 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' and one for 'Best Pop Instrumental Performance'. Now that I've discovered her music, I will definitely continue to listen to her songs, because she has a beautiful voice and writes amazing lyrics.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Emily Deschanel.
Oh my god is this woman beautiful. She has amazingly beautiful eyes and a beautiful smile. Of course, it's not just her beauty that has me captured, Liz Vassey also plays a pretty cool character on CSI. Plus, she played Nikki on 'Nikki & Nora', so we know that she's cool. But honest to god, I just want to look at her picture all day long.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: on all of you who will exercise your First Amendment Rights at the National Day of Protest Saturday.
When I was a kid, I loved, loved, loved 'Sister Act'. I completely adored Whoopi Goldberg and wanted to be the kid in all of her movies. I loved watching 'Corrina, Corrina' and 'Bogus' even though these were sad movies. Movies that dealt with death and grief, but they had something inherently positive and hopeful. The older I got, the more respect I developed for Whoopi. I found out about her involvement with feminist organizations and put this picture on the wall in my room:
I realized how she must have struggled being a woman of color in Hollywood, yet she never lost her sense of humor. I saw parts of 'The Color Purple' and was completely blown away by her amazing acting. Naturally, I always knew that she was talented, but this role really showed her acting abilities.

When Rosie left 'The View', I thought that I would stop watching it. But then I found out that Whoopi would be on and that spiked my interest. Sometimes, I wonder how Joy and Whoopi can sit next to Sherry and Elizabeth and not want to smack them over the head. But Whoopi keeps her cool and tries as often as possible to bring in her opinion and be a voice of reason.
And because it was her birthday this week: Happy Birthday, Whoopi!! Thanks for being an ally.

(I'm sorry that this is so late, I'm having a bad weekend.)

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Brooke Smith.
I've heard people complain about Erica Hahn and I've heard enough people say 'Really, you like her? But she's so mean' and I've read that the writers were going to make her 'unlikable', but I was impressed with Erica right away and the more we got to see of her, the more I fell for her. When we first met Dr. Hahn in season 2, she was snarky, determined and willing to fight for her patient. She also showed vulnerability when Alex told her that the heart was going to go to Denny Duquette.

When we first met Dr. Hahn in season 2, she was snarky, determined and willing to fight for her patient. She also showed vulnerability when Alex told her that the heart was going to go to Denny Duquette.
In season 3, Erica was as snarky as I remembered her and she also showed that the patient's welfare is her top priority. Erica was able to control her emotions and her ego to work together with Burke, which is something I haven't seen from other characters on this show.
Then season 4 came around and Brooke came on the show full-time. I was so excited about her because on her first day of work, she stood up to McDreamy and McSteamy and told the Chief off. Erica took work seriously and she was a feminist, something I especially loved about her because most of the other female characters on the show weren't, at least not so openly. Erica even told Sloan to stop hitting on her and wasn't at all impressed by his charm, something no other female had yet done on GA. When Erica and Callie started becoming friends I hoped and prayed that the rumors were true and that it would lead to more, because their chemistry was amazing and they would have been great together.
And great they were. For a few episodes, we were allowed to see Erica fall for Callie hard and their attempt at figuring out their feelings. We got to see their first kiss and their first date and in one episode, we were even allowed to see things from Erica's point of view. Erica went through changes that a lot of people out there go through and came to the realization that she was 'so, so, so gay, extremely gay' and that it was okay for her. She was bold and tried to give Callie confidence but she also allowed Callie to see her vulnerable side. In short, she was human, but she also was adult enough to face her feelings, her fears openly. And she was ready to talk about it, a quality most characters on GA also lack.
The fact that ABC decided to 'let Brooke Smith go' is a great disservice to the quality of GA and shows that creativity and quality doesn't seem to be the first thing on their minds. Which I hope will not only hurt us as the fans, but will also come back to kick them in the ass.
To end this post on a positive note, I will never in my life forget this scene, because it probably is my favorite Callica-moment. Can you spell smitten?Friday, October 31, 2008
My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: Barack Obama. You should really read that post, amazing how she puts her thoughts into words.
Cristina Yang is one of the reasons why I still watch Grey's Anatomy. She's hardcore, she's driven and unforgiving and she still manages to be Meredith's 'person' without going insane. (Okay, that Derm episode might have been slightly insane). Cristina rarely shows her feelings, but when she does, I am always blown away by how well Sandra Oh can act.
I can't imagine any other actress portraying Cristina as well as Sandra Oh does. I've seen Sandra in 'Sideways' and in 'Under the Tuscan Sun', but I truly believe she does drama best. Which is why I will keep on watching Grey's Anatomy as long as Cristina brings some sanity into this hospital.

(Sorry for the shortness of this post, but I had a long day at university and I'm just too tired.)

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose Weekend Crush this weekend is: 30 Rock.
On last night's episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations (8x07), Sara Sidle left Las Vegas and Gil Grissom to fight and overcome her demons. I have to say that I was sad to see her go, even though I know she'll be back in Season 9. On ER, Jorja Fox played Maggie Doyle, a lesbian doctor who befriended Carter, but sadly never had a real storyline to call her own. I started watching CSI after I had seen one episode in the States while I was there on vacation. I knew Jorja from ER and had a crush on her, so back home I decided to give that show a try. The science parts of CSI really interested me, but after five seasons I could have easily given up watching that show. The only thing that kept me watching? Sara, and, naturally, the actress who portrays her, Jorja!

Jorja Fox is an amazing actress and the chemistry between her and William Petersen aka Gil Grissom was one main reason why I kept loving CSI. Yes, I was disappointed at times by the portrayal - or lack thereof - of their relationship, but I was drawn to it none the less.

Now that Jorja no longer is a series regular, I will definitely miss seeing her on my TV each week. While Jorja probably isn't what you would call a traditional beauty, I love her smile and her voice. Some of you might not know this, but Jorja also sings and plays guitar. Jorja is a vegetarian and stands up for what she believes in, she has taken part in an animal rights campaign and features some really interesting articles on her website. Plus, it doesn't hurt to think that she might be playing for my team either.

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders.
This weekend I'm crushing hard on both an actress and the character she portrays. How could I not, after last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy? Yes, I am talking about the amazing Dr. Miranda Bailey, portrayed by the equally amazing Chandra Wilson.
Even though Miranda was 'The Nazi' at the beginning, I liked her character. She is always right, she expects only the best from her interns and she also always gives her best. She knows when to offer support and wisdom and when to kick the interns'/residents' asses. And, despite saying that she doesn't talk about sex, she still helps Callie out with the whole going south of the border inexperience.
Chandra Wilson is doing an amazing job at portraying the sometimes harsh and always tough surgeon and teacher and also showing Miranda's softer sides, making her a likeable character. She shows her incredible acting range with just one character, which in my humble opinion, isn't that frequent on TV shows. Chandra has been nominated for an Emmy Award three years in a row and I think it's about time she also won the Emmy. This year, Chandra won the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Scene Stealing Star" - which makes so much sense, since Bailey does steal all the scenes!
Count me in on the 'Bailey for Chief' team!

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Helena Bonham Carter. This woman is so captivating, I'll have to do her justice some other time!
When I first started watching Cold Case, I was all over Lilly and honestly, when Tracie Thoms joined the show, I wasn't sure whether another woman had a place in this show for me. I just wanted to focus on Lilly and Lilly alone. But the more I found out about Kat Miller, Tracie's character, the more I started liking both Kat and Tracie. While Lilly is serious and all business, Kat brings an easy-going nature to the show. Her character works especially well with Nick Vera and their chemistry and easy banter lightens up the show. As Kat, Tracie shows a very special charm that makes me swoon at times.

I had never seen Tracie Thoms in any other movie or show before she appeared on Cold Case and when I finally got around to watching Rent, I was very pleased to see her in the movie. Tracie has an amazing voice and is a great actress, especially as the uptight Joanne who is so different to Kat.
On top of being talented and open to playing a lesbian character (YAY!), Tracie is beautiful and charming. What more can anyone ask for?

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Thandie Newton.
I've had a crush on this wonderful lady for a while and now that I've met her that crush just got bigger. I think we all know what's coming now: How crushworthy is Bridget McManus? Very, I can tell you that much. She's hilarious in her stand-up routines and on Brunch with Bridget, but when she talks about serious topics once in a while you pretty much instantly know that she has depth. She's very open about her sexuality and, in my humble opinion, is a role model to questioning teens because she's not afraid to speak her mind and say 'Look, I'm gay, but that's fine. In fact, I very happy as a lesbian and you should be too.' She talks openly about her body issues and weight problems, but she also pens hilarious songs about men she wouldn't even date if she were straight. The way Bridget comes across on her show is also pretty much how I experienced her and I was so blessed to talk to her for a short while and it was amazing. She really listened to what I had to say even though we had just met and honestly, she could have cared less about me. But she was genuinely nice and just as beautiful in person as she is on TV. Now that she's on TV (woohoo!), I'm allowed to say that.

My Weekend Crush

I remember when I was a kid, I liked watching the news at night because of Ingrid Thurnher. Sometimes, my parents allowed me to stay up until 10 o'clock so that I could watch the "ZIB2" on the Austrian national public service broadcaster. I wasn't really interested in the news and I didn't understand most of the things they talked about, but I loved watching Ingrid Thurnher because she seemed so smart, knowledgeable and eloquent. She always radiates competence and that drew me to her like a moth to the flame. Watching her now, I know that she knows what she's doing and that she has enormous amounts of knowledge stored in her brain, but also that she must prepare very carefully for each interview. Ingrid Thurnher was the anchor for the news and now hosts the round table discussions. What I love most when watching these is when she smirks at some nonsense comment by a politician - even though she always stays neutral, she sometimes can't quite hide her feelings.

My Weekend Crush

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, whose weekend crush this weekend is: Rachel Weisz, who is both stunningly beautiful and hot!
Melissa Etheridge. How could I not love that woman? Firstly, her music. "Like the Way I Do". "Angels Would Fall". "Similar Features". "I'm the Only One". "Map of the Stars". I don't think I could choose a favorite song. My favorite Melissa song changes every day, depending on the mood I'm in. That's so great about her music, there's a song for every mood. If someone told me I had to choose only one artist that I could listen to for the rest of my life I could easily choose her as I listen to her music most of the time anyways. Secondly, Melissa Etheridge seems to do everthing she does with conviction and because she really believes in it.

Thirdly, she's a lesbian icon and a great one for that matter.
"I have achieved the American dream. The big beautiful American dream is mine. And that's not easy thing, 'cause I'm different. At least that's what they say. They say I'm different, but you know what? As of today, I'm done. I'm done being different, okay?"
As I said, how could I not love that woman?

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders.'Post-rational' might be my new favorite word, if I can just think of a way to throw it into a conversation.
I first discovered Rachel Maddow through the love and praise others gave her. Maddow has a degree from both Standford and Oxford University. She is the first openly gay American Rhodes scholar and obviously very smart. Her charm make her interesting to watch when she gets into discussions with right-wing politicians and analysts because even though they clearly disagree, Rachel keeps her cool and her cheerfulness. This woman knows what she's talking about and on top of that all, she's cute!

My Weekend Crush
I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Dorothy Surrenders.I first saw Maggie Gyllenhaal in 'Mona Lisa Smile', in which she played a student who was sexually more open than the times allowed. I fell completely in love with her and her role, so I decided to buy 'Secretary' and that movie made me love her even more. She plays a young woman with a masochistic streak and everything about her in that movie just was right. Maggie has that dark sexual energy that makes her incredibly attractive and her eyes, how I love her eyes. She has such a sparkle in her eyes, I could get lost in them.

Unfortunately, I've only seen one other of her movies, 'The Dark Knight', but she was pretty good in that one too.
